Associate professor at the University of Barcelona and author of published research on pulp regeneration. Work is carried out under the microscope whenever the case allows, with a conservative approach: keep the natural tooth rather than replace it.

The way we see it
I work mainly in endodontics, oral surgery and implants, and have done for over twenty years. I took my doctorate at the University of Barcelona, I teach, and I publish research on keeping teeth that used to be written off.
What I see most are teeth that have already been marked for extraction. Sometimes that is the right call, and I confirm it. Other times a microscope and 3D imaging turn up information a conventional radiograph cannot give, and the tooth can be kept.
At the appointment I tell you what I can see, what the options are and what each one involves. I will also tell you if the right thing for now is to do nothing.
This is not my way of working, it is the practice’s: whoever sees you, the approach is the same.

Scientific publications
Part of Dr. Gaviño’s work is researching how to save teeth that would once have been given up for lost. This work is published in international endodontics journals and is open to consultation.

Teaching and outreach
Invited speaker at the congresses of the Spanish Endodontic Society (2021 and 2023) and at that of the Spanish Society of Conservative and Aesthetic Dentistry (Pamplona, 2022).
He has taught postgraduate courses at the universities of Santiago de Compostela, Alfonso X, UCAM, Católica de Valencia and CEU Cardenal Herrera.
Author of the chapter “Regenerative procedures in endodontics: biological therapies for the dental pulp and their clinical application” in the book Endodoncia para todos.
Seeing what the naked eye cannot
Some diagnoses depend on being able to look closer, and some treatment plans depend on seeing in three dimensions.
- Operating microscope
- Magnification and dedicated lighting reveal structures the naked eye cannot make out. It improves diagnostic precision in endodontics, surgery and prosthetics, and makes minimally invasive treatment possible at a level of detail that cannot be reached without it.
- CBCT 3D
- Cone beam computed tomography gives three-dimensional images of the tooth, the bone and the surrounding anatomy. It reveals lesions, fractures, resorptions or hidden infections that a conventional X-ray can miss. Not using it when it is indicated means losing information that would change the diagnosis.
- Digital workflow
- Intraoral scanner, digital planning and 3D printing. The mouth is captured digitally without conventional impressions, the treatment is planned on that model, and what was planned is then manufactured.

Dr. José Gaviño
Dentist — endodontics, oral surgery and implantology
He runs the clinic and handles the endodontic, oral surgery and implant cases. He works with an operating microscope and, where indicated, with 3D imaging.
His approach is conservative: keep the natural tooth wherever possible. An implant is a good solution once there is no tooth left — not an improvement on having one.
Aurora Gaviño
Practice manager and dental hygienist
Empathy, trust and person. These are the three words Aurora uses to sum up how she works, and the third gives the other two their meaning: whoever sits in the chair is not a treatment, they are someone with a name and a history.
As a qualified dental hygienist she treats patients, and at the same time she runs the clinic day to day. She joined the team in 2019 after years running other businesses, and that background shows in how the practice is organised.

Àngela Carrillo
Paediatric and infant dentistry
Working exclusively in paediatric dentistry since 2018. She is part of the teaching team on the University of Barcelona’s Master’s in Paediatric Dentistry, and trained at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Esplugues. Her particular interest is prevention and dental education for patients and families, and she is trained in breastfeeding support to guide them from the very start of feeding.
